The scope of dermatology has expanded to a great extent in the past two decades, keeping pace with advances in other spheres of medicine. Today not only are patients concerned about their skin disease, but also turn to their dermatologist for advice on cosmetic problems. Patients present common conditions like acne (pimples), melasma (pigmentation of the face), vitiligo, eczemas of various types, fungal infections, psoriasis, lichen planus, urticaria (hives), leprosy, hair loss problems and nail diseases.

Some conditions pose diagnostic challenges and may require a biopsy to be reviewed by a dermatopathologist to arrive at a diagnosis. Conditions of a nevoid nature (birthmarks) and excess hair growth on the face or body are treated by lazer therapy. Dermatologists also do a number of minor surgical procedures like cauterization of warts, nail surgeries and surgery to restore pigmentation in resistant vitiligo.

The Holy Family Hospital has a number of dermatologists on its panel who have many years of experience in treating skin diseases. They see patients in the OPD everyday, where they treat common skin conditions. Life threatening skin conditions like toxic epidermal necrolysis, Steven Johnson syndrome, pemphigus and severe drug reactions are treated on an in-patient basis together with the senior physicians in the hospital.
