Romila Palliative Care
Advances in medical science have made it possible for us to live longer, healthier lives. But chronic and life-limiting illnesses can strike at any time, often resulting in our whole lives falling apart, a sense of losing control, and a feeling of hopelessness that can impact not just the person but also family members and care givers too.
Palliative care, a relatively nascent field in India, addresses these challenges. By offering a support system that helps enhance the quality of life of patients by working to alleviate the pain and discomfort they are experiencing, it provides relief from distress and complications. The concept of total pain management is at the foundation of palliative care. Going beyond physical pain, the approach recognizes that patients are not mere objects of ‘treatment’ but essentially human beings, who respond to compassion, heartfelt care, and the positive energy that comes from affirmative beliefs and deep faith.
The Romila Palliative Care Centre, an initiative of SNEHA, has been set up by Dr. Armida Fernandez in memory of her daughter Romila, who lost her life after a brave battle with cancer in 2014. The services offered include both an OPD as well as home-based care, provided by a team of trained doctors, nurses, and counselors working with nutritionists, physiotherapists and other professionals, to deliver quality care to the patient, their family and caregivers. Initially addressing the needs of cancer patients, the project is expanding to include other life- limiting and debilitating illnesses. The Centre aims to help by offering compassionate and competent care to enable patients to live a life of dignity and hope through their illness, and at the same time enhance the skills of their loved ones to look after them better, with greater assurance and confidence.
