From simple beginnings as a manually-run laboratory, our Department of pathology has moved with the times. It has gradually acquired state-of-the-art instruments that have contributed to making it the sophisticated modern laboratory facility that it is today.

The state-of-the-art instruments and high-end facilities we use contribute to the accuracy and reliability of the tests we perform as well as the enviable turnaround time we are able to achieve.

In the field of haematology, automation of laboratory tests decreases the opportunities for clinicians to examine blood pictures closely but, at the same time, increases the need for technicians with keen observation.

Our laboratory exemplifies this trend by the sharp visual skills displayed by our technicians in detecting various types of malarial parasites.

The Sysmex Automated Haematology Analysers SF-3000 and XT-1800i employ the Flow Cytometry principle using semi-conductor laser apparatus. Both machines provide histograms and scattergrams that assist us in the diagnosis of complex anaemias and leukaemias.

The Micro-Sed from Electa Lab Inverness is an Auto-ESR Analyser. It provides the Erythrocyte Sediment Rate in 30 min, which halves the time taken by the manual Westergren method.

The Stago Start 4 (Diagnostica Stago) and Coagulator (Behnk) are automated instruments that provide high-precision results for Prothrombin Time, partial Thromboplastin Time, Fibrinogen and Factor VIII.

The Vitros-250 (J&J Ortho Clinical Diagnostics) is an advanced, fully-automated Dry Chemistry Analyser for a comprehensive menu of biochemical tests. It uses colorimetric, potentiometric and immunometric assemblies.

This instrument is a dream machine, our “pride and joy”, which caused a sea change in our reportage of Biochemistry.

The Dimension RXL Max (Dade-Behring / Siemens) is a discrete random access microprocessor-controlled integrated Wet Chemistry Analyser that measures a variety of analytes including enzyme activities in body fluids. It uses multiple-test reagent cartridges and disposable reaction cuvettes to provide rapid, accurate and precise test results.

The Electrolyte Analyzer 9180 (Roche) is a powerful tool designed to quickly, accurately and efficiently conduct basic electrolyte testing. It is based on ion-selective electrode measurements.

The Easylite (Transasia) Analyser is an automated microprocessor-controlled instrument for the measurement of serum electrolytes.

The Blood Gas Analyser Compact 3 (AVL) is a microprocessor-controlled blood gas analyser for quantitative in vitro whole blood measurement of pH, pCO2, pO2 etc using only 55 microlitres of whole blood.

The NycoCard (Axis-Shield) Reader II is a rapid quantitative analyser which measures HbA1c (glycosylated haemoglobin), which determines the quality of metabolic control in diabetics. It also measures microalbuminuria, and independently predicts cardiovascular morbidity in essential hypertension.

Diabetic nephropathy is a frequent and serious secondary complication of diabetes mellitus. Early detection of the disease at the stage of microalbuminuria is important for its outcome and progression.

The NycoCard is also used to determine D-Dimer.

The Triage Meter Pro (Biosite) is a point-of-care instrument for the rapid diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (myoglobin, CK-MB & Troponin-I) and for the diagnosis and risk assessment of congestive cardiac failure (CHF) by evaluating the BNP beta natriuretic peptide.

The Cobas h 232 (Roche) is another point-of-care instrument used to determine the Troponin-T.

We now have the Liaison (DiaSorin) Immunoassay System, which offers an array of tests for infectious diseases, oncology and endocrinology. It employs flash chemiluminescence technology. Thyroid function tests and cancer markers are some of the many tests in its wide menu.

Our laboratory carries out stringent quality control for all tests, which are performed either by analysers twice a day or are done manually. We also participate in external quality control programmes from Bio-Rad and Transasia.
