Overview
Every month, around 200 patients – newborn babies, children and adults – regain the power to communicate thanks to our expert audiologists and speech therapists. It’s a gift they receive thanks to our experts who work with individuals who have difficulty hearing, speaking, swallowing, comprehending and using language.

Disorders in these areas may arise due to deformities, damage due to trauma or injury or simply due to the natural ageing process. We evaluate and diagnose these disorders as well as offer therapy that does not require medical or surgical intervention.

We also work closely with ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialists, who use medical intervention as well as surgical and minimal interventional procedures to cure disorders.

When the hospital was being built, a sound-proof area was set up and thus our department is one of the oldest facilities of its kind in Mumbai. Today, we boast excellent diagnostic tests and rehabilitative procedures so that we can go the extra mile to spare individuals from a life of isolation.

Advanced Diagnostic Procedures
Our professionals use an advanced spectrum of tests to assess disorders relating to both the hearing and vocal apparatus so that patients may receive appropriate treatment. This has been made possible due to advances in technology, which help us evaluate impairments with unerring accuracy and precision.

Our repertoire of hearing assessment tests consists of the following:
1.Pure Tone Audiometry : This procedure identifies hearing loss in children, adults and the elderly. With procedures that include Air Conduction, Bone Conduction and Masking, our audiologists may recommend the use of assistive listening devices, corrective surgery or speech therapy.

2. Audiometry Brainstem Response : This test is used to measure the integrity of the auditory pathways to the upper brainstem. It is extensively used to screen infants.

3. Tympanometry : This procedure uses a tympanometer to assess disorders of the middle ear, which are a relatively common occurrence. It reveals whether hearing loss is due to sensory dysfunction or due to a mechanical dysfunction of the bones in this part of the ear. Tympanometry also assesses ‘stiffness’ of the eardrum.

4. Acoustic Reflex Testing : This test detects the functioning of the stapedius, the smallest skeletal muscle in the human body and located in the middle ear. This muscle causes the smallest bone in the body – the stapes or stirrup in the middle ear – to contract in the conduction of sound.

All our tests are conducted in a sound-proof chamber which is equipped with a modern clinical audiometer, ABR machine, tympanometer and impedence audiometer for the diagnosis of hearing impairments.

Speech & Language Therapy
The power to speak is critical to every child's development and restoring this ability contributes to healthy growth and development.

We offer the full range of rehabilitative therapy for speech & language disorders that require therapeutic intervention. These include stuttering and stammering, aphasia, swallowing disorders, a cleft-palate (which makes it difficult to articulate speech), delayed speech & language disorders, among others.

Once we detect and assess the nature and severity of a speech dysfunction, we recommend remedial therapy. We customise the therapy programme to suit the patient’s needs, counsel the patient and his / her family, take a detailed case history and explain therapeutic options. Patients then undergo a series of standardised diagnostic tests before therapy begins.

Hearing Aids
We offer a variety of state-of-the-art hearing aids as well as servicing and maintenance services for these devices at our Hearing Aid Centre. More.

The types of hearing aids our department deals with include conventional devices as well as implantable aids such as bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA) and Cochlear Implants.

Hearing Aid Services (conventional types)
* We evaluate the need for a hearing aid
* Prescribe the specific type of hearing aid appropriate for you
* We offer you a choice of either analog or digital hearing aid
* We undertake training and counseling for hearing aid use and care

Thanks to our expertise, scores of individuals thus remain connected to the world of sound.

Implantable Hearing Devices
Individuals who require an implantable hearing device can benefit from the experience of our reputed ENT surgeons. Rehabilitation following implantation is conducted by our Audiology Department. More.

Cochlear Implant: We also offer a comprehensive Cochlear Implant Programme, a cutting-edge area in assistive hearing devices. Here too, our experienced ENT surgeons work closely with our audiologists in a holistic approach to rehabilitating patients with severe hearing loss.

A cochlear implant benefits individuals – both children and adults – with profound hearing loss. It includes a surgical procedure to implant the device and extensive post-surgery rehabilitative therapy which our expert audiologists are trained to undertake. More.

Out-Patient Services
Our department caters to both in-patients and out-patients. The latter may include both walk-in patients as well as those referred by our own consultants. Appointments may be made in person or over the telephone.
